EGYPTIAN-BRED DEFINITION CHANGE
At the July meeting regarding relevant By-Law changes, it was discussed by Board Members and Trustees that the Egyptian-Related/Bred category can be confusing. As you know, an Egyptian-Related/Bred has been defined as (1) One who was produced either by breeding a Straight Egyptian stallion to a purebred Arabian who is not Straight Egyptian OR (2) One whose grandsires are both Straight Egyptian and whose dam is a purebred Arabian who is not Straight Egyptian. When this definition was first implemented, it was done in order to increase the number of eligible horses. This is not the case any more and the second definition can be very confusing.

With this in mind, the Board of Directors voted to change the name as well as the definition as follows:

An Egyptian Sired (previously known as Egyptian Bred/Related) horse, as defined by The Pyramid Society, is a purebred Arabian who is produced by breeding a Straight Egyptian stallion to a purebred Arabian mare who is not Straight Egyptian, beginning with registrations of 2005. All existing horses presently meeting the definition of Egyptian Bred/Related will be grandfathered in through the remainder of their lifetime.

Only horses of certifiable ancestry are eligible for classification as Straight Egyptian or Egyptian Sired, as defined by The Pyramid Society, and therefore eligible for Society managed and promoted programs.

THE PYRAMID SOCIETY HAS THREE NEW BOARD MEMBERS!

Henry Metz
Henry Metz is one of The Pyramid Society’s newest Board Members. Henry and his wife, Christie, joined the Pyramid Society in 1990. Since then, both have been invaluable supporters of both the Society and The Pyramid Foundation, INC. Recently, Henry and Christie Metz made the move from Florida to Santa Ynez, California where Silver Maple Farm has taken up home in a new facility. Henry is known for his excellent business sense, as well as a keen intellect and passion for the Arabian breed. The Pyramid Society is honored to welcome Henry to the Board.

KARL BRECKON

Please help us welcome Karl Breckon to the Board. Karl first became interested in Egyptian Arabians when they were invited to a farm conference held at Hank and Sandy DeShazer’s farm. Says Karl about the occasion, “When Jacki and I first saw Hank and Sandy’s mare Havallah, we just fell in love with the stunning beauty and movement of this breed.” In 1995 the Breckons became Pyramid Society members and attended their first Egyptian Event. To Karl, the most memorable times at the Egyptian Event come from when he is in the show ring. His favorite horse is MC Alexis, which he showed to a Top Ten finish at Nationals, but is also gentle enough for their 5 year-old daughter, Erika, to ride.

Now as a board member, Karl hopes to help expand Egyptian Arabian bloodlines by providing his input to The Pyramid Society. He is particularly interested in the benefits and programs offered to members. We asked Karl how Jacki would describe him if she were given three words to do so. The response: Honest, Intelligent, and Caring. We at The Pyramid Society agree!
In his free time, Karl enjoys taking his 5 year-old daughter, Erika, on outings and spending time with his family. When we asked him about a motto that most closely represents his life, Karl responded with the following, “I will answer this question with the following motto that I tell my daughter, ‘You can do anything you want, if you try.’”

KENT MAYFIELD
We are also delighted to welcome Kent Mayfield to the Board. Kent has been a member of The Pyramid Society since 1991. As a long-standing member, he has this to say about falling in love with Egyptian Arabians. “…the true desert-bred has something characteristic in its look, in the particular metallic sheen of its hair, the firmness of its muscles, the special animation of its temperament, which distinguishes it. And once I saw that in a lovely flea-bitten mare owned by Marianne and John Hacklander, Hadaya Fayekaara, there was no turning back.”

As a Board Member, Kent has several goals. Of utmost importance is finding ways to engage all members in the activities that are required to preserve and perpetuate the desert tradition of The Pyramid Society. Kent’s vision, also, is to see The Pyramid Society play a greater role internationally. He feels that because the Society has carved a niche, our organization is a treasure to Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts worldwide. This gives us an opportunity to increase our visibility and introduce the Egyptian Arabian to a global audience.

Kent also acts as the President of Al Khamsa, an association of breeders dedicated to the preservation of the Arabian horse as it originated among the horse-breeding tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. Between his many Arabian related activities, Kent does find time to sing in classical ensembles, stay involved in his church, and “cook up a storm in a small, cluttered kitchen!”
When we asked Kent what owning Egyptian Arabians has taught him, he told us, “Above all, humility. We stand in a great tradition. The horse has been here before us; our colleagues have set the pace and marked the way. Ours is the honored responsibility of sustaining the momentum with courage in changing times.” It is easy to understand where Kent’s humility comes from. Kent, and his partner Jack’s 2002 EBC filly (also Kent’s favorite horse), Nakhda Saqqara, received such titles as EBC Champion, Straight Egyptian Futurity Champion Filly, and Reserve Junior Champion.

In three words Kent describes himself as Persistent, Unafraid, and Playful. And what motto does Kent live by? Two of them: “Predictions are always difficult to make, especially when referring to the future.” And Churchill’s, “The further we can look into the past, the further we can look into the future.”
The Pyramid Society is genuinely pleased to have the privilege of working with two such remarkable men as Karl and Kent in the coming years.

OUR NEWEST ADDITION!
Beth Garrity is one of the newest additions to The Pyramid Society’s staff. Growing up in Lexington, the horse capital of the world, the love of horses hit early. By age seven she was taking lessons regularly. Beth loves a horse that poses a challenge riding. She feels it is extremely rewarding and brings horse and rider closer to one another.

In 1996, she took a one-year hiatus to spend some time in Germany as an exchange student. Though she found the experience “unique, adventurous, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”, Beth was happy to return home to her Kentucky Wildcats. So loyal is she, that Beth graduated in 2003 from the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics, obtaining her Bachelors of Business Administration with a major concentration in Marketing.

She is currently putting that degree to good use as the Marketing and Public Relations contact for The Pyramid Society. The thing Beth is most excited about working on is the Egyptian Event; particularly in working on the art auction, helping to put the Prize List together, and soliciting more sponsors. In her free time, Beth enjoys watching professional football; in particular the Green Bay Packers! We are happy to have Beth aboard!

24TH ANNUAL EGYPTIAN EVENT: JUNE 7-12, 2004
The dates for the 2004 Egyptian Event have been set. This year, join us in celebrating The Pyramid Society’s 35th Anniversary. Because The Pyramid Society was founded in the 60’s, the Society’s 2004 overall Egyptian Event theme will be “The 60’s”, fondly recalling those good ole days. The dinner dance will feature an auction of works by prominent equine artists to benefit The Society’s ongoing programs, and will also offer sounds of the Sixties as well as an opportunity to reminisce about that by-gone era! So, be thinking of that favorite hair-do, peace jewelry, or retro record; a word of caution, leave those blue polyester leisure suits at home, but break out those blue suede shoes! For more information about the 2004 Egyptian Event, please visit this website beginning in March, or contact The Pyramid Society at (859) 231-0771. We look forward to seeing you June 7-12th, 2004 at the 24th Annual Egyptian Event!

THE RESULTS ARE IN - NOW READ THE EGYPTIAN EVENT SUMMARY
If you attended the 2003 Egyptian Event, then you know your feelings about the week, but what about what everyone else thought? Well, we’ve compiled a sample of the comments from the 72 Event Surveys received, and here’s your chance to see what others thought about 2003’s Event!

Respondents were overwhelmingly clear in their thoughts about adding a sixth day to the Event. The verdict: the sixth day was a hit. While past years had basically contained the same number of activities, 2003 allowed attendees to enjoy more of the activities at a leisurely pace. “The evenings ended earlier & there was more free time, therefore a more relaxed feeling.”

When it came to showing we decided to try some new formats. Regarding the new format for Halter classes in which all horses were required to enter the arena at a trot, most respondents felt it was “more exciting to watch”. The music seemed to be a hit, as well; attendees really liked the upbeat entrance! It also seems that most of you enjoyed the judges this year, as marks were high for all of them. Not only did our judges meet the approval of nearly every respondent, but you also gave us excellent suggestions for future judges.

The respondents felt the Egyptian Breeder’s Challenge was a “great opportunity for an excellent breeding and potential recoup of money”. We are so pleased that so many of you felt positively about this program and even better news – it is still growing by leaps and bounds.

So what was the best part of the 2003 Egyptian Event? It depends on whom you ask. The responses for this question ran the gamut of activities offered at this year’s Event. Here are some of the answers that seem to sum it up: “Great weather! We continue to love the overall atmosphere; it’s the best show of the year!” – “The greatest reunion on Earth!” – “All of it!” – “The Parties” – “The excitement and the overall quality of horses and trainers.” – “The variety of activities/classes”.

Thank you to all of those members who took the time to fill out the 2003 Egyptian Event Survey. Your comments help us to work towards that goal of making it the best it can be. Plans are already underway to utilize many of your ideas to make the 2004 Egyptian Event, at which we will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of The Pyramid Society, even better!

FESTIVAL OF THE SUN
Martha and Charlie Suarez were invited by event organizers to represent the Arabian breed at this year’s Festival of the Sun at Calder Race Course in Miami, Florida, on Saturday, October 11th. This festival annually boasts attendance of “15,000 more than The Kentucky Derby”, and features several activities designed to educate visitors on the unique qualities of various horse breeds. This year, over 40 horses from 14 different breeds were presented to attendees in the “Parade of Breeds” Horse Exhibition. In the Horse Discovery Village, guests had the opportunity to experience hands-on learning about many of the horses from the exhibition. What a wonderful opportunity to showcase our horses to such a tremendous crowd and a special thanks to Charlie and Martha for representing the Arabian breed so proudly.

LAS VEGAS FARM FESTIVAL
September 23-25th, Marilee Mott and two of her Egyptian Arabians gave over 9,000 children the chance to learn about the desert-breed up close and personal. The occasion was the 2003 Las Vegas Farm Festival at Horsemen’s Park. Along with her Arabians, this kindergarten teacher displayed a child-friendly exhibit on Arabian horses featuring horse bones, books, posters, and fliers about Arabians. This is Marilee’s fifth year of involvement with this program. We commend her commitment to the Egyptian Arabian horse.

PASSING OF A DEAR FRIEND
Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family of Diane Appleton, who passed away September 25th. Diane suffered a pulmonary embolism from surgery complications.

Diane dedicated much of her life to Egyptian Arabians and became actively involved in The Pyramid Society in 1996. Since then, Diane worked very closely with the Egyptian Breeders Challenge program.

In 1998, along with her husband Dana McRoberts, Diane moved to Quitman, Arkansas and founded Cherokee Line Arabians, a breeding farm specializing in Straight Egyptian horses. As proof of the quality that Diane and Dana so greatly strived for, Cherokee Line Arabians along with Dreamscape Farms, were able to produce horses that garnered substantial wins at Egyptian Events year after year. Andy Hillis, Diane’s daughter, asks that in lieu of flowers, donations instead be made to the Quitman Lions Club, in which Diane was extremely active. Please contact The Pyramid Society for more information on making donations.

OVER 3500 HORSES ADDED TO THE AL KHAMSA ROSTER
At Al Khamsa's Annual Meeting, held September 2003, The stallion, El Nasser (RAS # 9 - 1938 grey stallion) achieved a passing vote as an accepted ancestor of breeding stock on the Roster of Al Khamsa horses.

EL NASSER
(Root Stallion #41 in RAS Studbook, 1948, p.44) (former race name "Didane")
Grey stallion foaled: May 1938
Sire: Douhayman al-Ajarrash, of the Jibur tribe
Dam: Dajaniah, a Kuhaylah Dajania of the horses of Ahmed al-Taha

Bred by Sheikh Ahmed al-Taha of the al-Juhaych tribe near Aleppo. Acquired by Henri Pharaon, who sold the horse to Khader Michuu who sold him to Ahmed Abu El Futuh. Acquired by the RAS in 1947 where he was used in their breeding programs.

The addition of El Nasser will add more than 3500 horses to the Al Khamsa Roster, the majority of which are straight Egyptian Arabian. (With so many straight Egyptians effected by this decision, it is recommended that breeders use current reference publications, and the Khamsat, to find El Nasser's influence in their horses’ pedigrees, and contact Al Khamsa for any needed verification of eligibility.)

As the sire of 11 recorded get in the RAS Studbook, El Nasser’s only otherwise Al Khamsa get to breed on was Sehr (x Salwa) 1948 grey mare. Sehr was the dam of the RAS/EAO stallion Shahriar (Nasralla), El Nasser's only progenitor. These newly eligible horses include some 37 get of Shahriar, 12 of which were imported to North America, with the most recent stallion effected being The Minstril.

It is through the mare Sehr that The Minstril gains acceptance with Al Khamsa. El Nasser's daughter, Sehr (EAO 75) was bred to the stallion, Balance (RAS 157), producing the colt Nasralla (EAO 128). Nasralla was bred to Hemmat, producing the mare *Baheia (AHR# 176128). *Baheia was bred to Gharib (SBWM*172) to produce the mare Bakria (GASB 801). Bakria was bred to Ibn Galal I (GASB*784) to produce the mare *Bahila (AHR 265239). *Bahila was a 1977 black mare imported by Bentwood in 1980...and *Bahila is the dam of The Minstril.

This is an extremely honorable designation for The Minstril and his eligible descendants. And congratulations to the supporters of Al Khamsa for their tireless efforts and ongoing research on behalf of all Bedouin Arabian horses.

(Note: The process of research into the background of all Al Khamsa horses is ongoing. Information on all bloodlines added to the Al Khamsa Roster since publication of Al Khamsa Arabians II will be presented in the upcoming edition, Al Khamsa Arabians III, which is in process.)

Imperial Imdal+ Has Passed Away

On December 5, 2003 Chapel Farm awoke to find Imperial Imdal+ (Ansata Imperial x Dalia) had passed in his sleep.  Imperial Imdal+, who was owned by Barbara Vallée of Vallée Arabians, had garnered in his life time many wins including the titles of US Reserve National Champion Stallion; World Champion Stallion, Salon Du Cheval, Paris France; Regions XV, XVI & East Coast Champion Stallion; and had twice taken the honor of Egyptian Event Supreme Champion Stallion. Not only this, but Imdal+ was also known worldwide as a sire of champions.  Imperial Imdal+ was 21 when he passed away. The Egyptian Arabian community will surely miss this legendary stallion. You can visit Chapel Farms Arabians on the web at www.chapelfarms.com.
